union jack a British based website

Welcome to Pigrest, formally called 'Potbelliedpigs'. Here you will find all sorts of information on pet pigs. Nearly all the information is based on my actual experiences and not just borrowed from other websites. If you've bought a pet pig or thinking about buying one then start right here.

The main thing you'll notice about this website is that it is British based so the information on here is aimed primarily at the British pet pig keeper. You may wonder if there is any difference between a pig keeper in the USA and one in the UK. In short we have many rules a regulations regarding pig keeping which we have over here that our friends over the pond do not have (yet). The other thing you may notice on this website is the odd bit of humour. As a pet pig keeper (pigs are never owned, believe me) I laugh alot, no seriously, I find when I am out with the pigs they generally will do something that makes me smile and quite often I am giggling like a school boy over something a pig has done. I have added this 'humour warning' on the front page because although this is a serious information website it also has some humorous bits too and you, as the reader, have to work out when I'm joking. It is part of the fun ofkeeping a pig. .. and turn the sound up if you are reading this !!!!

I have put the statement above in large font so readers can't say they missed it. Essentially I am a keeper of pet pigs. All my pigs are rescue pigs and sometimes I get asked to rescue a pig that I cannot keep so I try and find a home for it. Where a pet pig keeper does not have the transport or skills to transport a pig I may be able to assist. Recently I have assisted in finding homes for some rescued piglets. We (Barbara my wife and I) also helped someone out by taking their pigs to the vet for castration. I also assisted the vet during the castration. Over the years we have moved pigs all over the place and our herd has consisted of pigs we have rescued from as far South as Southend to as far North as Derbyshire, as far west as Colwyn Bay and as East as Caister On Sea. The pigs we have dealt with are generally Potbellied Pigs but more recently Kune Kune pigs and even Pot/Kune crosses. Our trips abroad have also bought us in contact with large farm pigs and even Wild Boars. We can assist in hoof trimming and tusk trimming and even advise veterinary surgeons on certain surgical procedures we have attended and filmed. We have worked with RSPCA inspectors, Animal Welfare Officers, DEFRA veterinarians and the police. We have even appeared on several TV programmes over the years.

What I am happy to do is to talk pet pigs. That means if you are thinking about getting a pet pig and wish to find unbiased information from someone who has been involved with pet pigs for more than 16 years then I'm your man. If you are interested in getting a pig and would like to bring yourself, your family and even your dog to meet us and our pigs to find out if you are really suited to keeping pet pigs then all you need to do is call us and arrange a day visit to our little sanctaury. One small point, if you are interested in keeping pigs for market then the place you need is somewhere like Pig Paradise run by my old friend Tony York who specialises in rare breeds and even runs courses on pig keeping.

Micro Pigs:

There has been a huge interest in pigs the press (and certain breeders) have refered to as Micro Pigs so I have included a page on them. I will not be drawn into arguments regarding Micro Pigs. I am currently involved in rehoming 6 piglets produced from a sow that was purchased as a Micro Pig. The boar (see photo right) was also bought as a Micro Pig and although is not even 12 months old yet is much larger than the size that the breeder said it would grow when fully grown. By the time the boar is fully grown (3years) it is likely to be double the size quoted by the breeder. If you are thinking about buying a Micro Pig please take the time to read my page on them. It could save you a great deal of money and also save me the trouble of trying to find a home for it in a few months time. BTW The pig in the photo was bought for £300 from a Wisbech breeder.

Latest Arrival - Winston The Micro Pig
Rob and Winston This is a photo which was orginally supplied by the breeder showing and small and cute Winston was collected from the breeder 20th November 2009. He was advertised as a Micro Pig and bought as a Micro Pig at 8 weeks old. He was sold 'intact' (not castrated) and the breeder recommended that he not be castrated "as it was too dangerous to do so".
Winston I took this photo last week here at Pigrest showing Winston now neutered and playing footy in our front yard. I also have a photo of Winston getting neutered.

Winston 128lb

This shows Winston on our scales (which are pretty accurate) at 128lb (58kg). Barney (with snout near the scales) was not touching the scales when the photo was taken. Winston is a great little pig but he's only 9 months old. I do expect him to grow quite a bit more before he is fully grown at 3 years old.

The one thing Winston is not is a Micro Pig.

This is Bushka who will always be in our hearts. These pages are dedicated to her memory. She lived with us for over 5 years, appeared in national newspapers, TV and even radio. Her stories have been told in various publications in the UK and many other countries around the world. She was my introduction to owning a potbellied pig and taught me much of what I know. Sadly she had to be put down and a necropsy (post mortum) showed she had a large internal growth. Biopsy report showed leukemia cells.

TV Researchers please note Bushka has been dead for many years !!!
