Believe it or not – training a potbellied pig is far easier than you might think. Contrary to what some might say, pigs are highly intelligent animals and have the will to learn. As potbellied pigs are naturally attracted to food, they will do whatever it takes to fill their bellies with a delicious treat. With a strong presence of patients, you can develop a deep connection with your pet pig and get them trained in no time.
Here are 5 tips on how to train your potbellied pig.
Learn how to gain their trust
You can’t expect your new pet to learn from you if they cannot trust you. Before you get started on your training, let your pet pig adjust to their new environment and get close to you and feel comfortable.
Choose what you want to teach your pet pig
The objective to your lessons is to understand how you will teach them certain tricks and commands. Pigs have the intelligence to pick up a few tricks such as sitting and shaking hands. You will also be able to tame them by using the bathroom upon command.
Determine the right moment to start training
Pigs will pick up tricks and information when they are interested in what you do. Be sure to never force lessons on your pig as their stubbornness will prevent you from teaching them your commands.
Use the proper commands
Pigs have the intelligence to pick up on words. This means you can use one or two-word type commands to allow your pig to learn the differences between each command.
Make treats a major part of their reward
For every lesson you treat your pot belly pig, they deserve a treat. Once your pig has understood the initial trick, you can treat them once they obey their commands. The main objective is to get them to obey you without needing a reward.
Be sure to keep the training process to a bare minimum of five minutes. This will help keep your pig’s attention to you and avoid any sudden frustrations that may occur during the training process.
